Development has been fast. From simple information pages on the web, to demands for advanced services that give the public the ability to deal with their community affairs directly online, at times that suit them. Development is not likely to slow down in the future either. This is why Valdemarsvik County chose EPiServer for their new website; to create a stable foundation to build on for many years to come.
The situation that Valdermarsvik County found themselves in probably sounds familiar to many. Demands for new website services are increasing, while we are stuck with an existing publication system that can be neither developed nor maintained rationally because the manufacturer has gone bankrupt. It was about time, in other words, to start looking for a new system to build upon for the future.
"Wise from all our experiences, we had three basic requirements when we started looking for a new publication system," says Tomas Zingmark at Valdermarsvik County.
"First of all, we wanted an easy-to-use system, so that everyone could work with it without too much instruction. Secondly, it should be well established so that there would be a sound organization behind the product and thereby a good possibility of it surviving for many years."
The third basic requirement that Tomas had was that there should be many consultants that work with and know the product. After a little research and checking with other councils, EPiServer was able to fulfill all these requirements.
The new website, which is gradually being built at the moment, has three clear distinguishable functions. Partly a purely informative site for county residents, with information on everything from childcare to refuse collection. Partly a window display for tourism and commercial information. And finally, a hub for communication with the public regarding the council's services with advanced self-service actions.
Two very important goals for the new website are to be able to give a better service to the public, and to relieve the pressure on employees by creating practical self-service solutions on the website. This was also one of the reasons for choosing Meridium as a consultant for this project.
"They know more than just the web. They have a solid and broad technical knowledge which is really going to be needed when we move on to start to build advanced services on the web, with links to our underlying administrative systems," concludes Tomas Zingmark.
