GoogleBot search requests failing against ASP.NET 2.0

A bug in a .NET component causes GoogleBot search requests against websites running on IIS 6.0 with ASP.NET 2.0 to fail. The way ASP.NET handles URL rewriting causes the browser to navigate to a non-existant address, thereby causing an “HTTP 500 Internal Server Error”.

In the case of EPiServer, this affects sites using friendly url since friendly url is, in itself, a way of redirecting the browser to a web address using a more intuitive link name.

Microsoft will most likely solve this in the near future, but for those who are concerned with diminishing search engine ranks there is a workaround. To resolve this issue temporarily, download "URL Rewrite fix.zip" and unzip the contents to your  "App_Browsers" folder (you may first need to create this folder if it doesn't exist) .
