Gartner’s market overview of digital commerce platforms

Choosing a digital commerce platform has become increasingly complex, as there is a wide variety of offerings, functionality and service offers. In addition, while ecommerce platforms are the core of the digital commerce market, they are often supported by a number of technologies.

In the Gartner Magic Quadrant, the report lists some of the basic functionality for digital commerce platforms. We believe some of the basic functionalyties can also be like: merchandising, pricing and promotion management; shopping cart and check-out; SEO tagging; product search capabilities; and localization for different countries. However, each platform implements this functionality differently, so it is important to understand what exactly is included and how it integrates with other technology.

Why should evaluators read the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Commerce?

We believe Gartner’s report focuses on how digital commerce vendors will be able to meet the future needs of end users. The Magic Quadrant can help evaluators and decision makers understand how the ecommerce market is changing, and which platforms are best suited to address those changes.

The report states, "that by 2023 80% of organizations using AI for digital commerce will achieve at least 25% improvement in customer satisfaction, revenue or cost reduction". Platforms of the future will be able to understand and anticipate individual customer needs, simplify the purchasing process, and personalize the customer experience.

The Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce 2019 evaluates 13 vendors. These vendors are categorized in the quadrant according to whether they are a Leader, a Challenger, a Visionary or a Niche Player.
